Treble Clef Notes
Tips & exercises to learn sheet music notes
Choosing the Right Learning Method is Key to Mastering Music Notes
The four most common music note learning methods are below. The best methods include repetition, random note identification, and progress tracking. Don’t forget they should also be fun!
1. Music Theory Books
Most students are introduced to music notes for the first time by their music theory book. The problem is that typical music theory books don’t spend enough time on note identification. Given how critical this is to a new student’s development, finding supplemental note-reading exercises is critical.
The note-reading exercises in music theory books also tend to present notes in patterns, making it harder for students to recall notes when presented in a different order.
Let’s also not forget that most music theory books are not that fun or motivational for new students.
2. Flashcards
Music note flashcards are a great tool to help students memorize note names as they challenge students to quickly identify random notes. The problem with flashcards is that it’s difficult to track progress and know when to introduce harder notes.
If students aren’t motivated and don’t understand how they’re improving, they’re less likely to continue practicing and improve.
Flashcards remain a solid tool for note-reading, but there are better options to keep students excited and motivated to learn.
3. Apps & Games
Apps and games can challenge students in a similar way to music note flashcards, but also add great progress trackers and timed exercises.
While they are a solid option for many students, the major drawback is increased screentime. As we try and reduce the amount of time children are using their devices, adding another app seems counterproductive.
Another drawback to apps is that students don’t get used to reading or playing standard sheet music.
4. Music Note Spellers
Note spellers are a great solution to help beginner and intermediate students learn music notes. The best note speller workbooks combine the strengths of the other three methods:
- Plentiful exercises that are timed and fun for students
- Random presentation of music notes to help with memorization
- Scoring systems to track progress & improve motivation
- Sheet music size exercises
